Maryland Supreme Court Upholds Child Victims Act as Constitutional

Maryland Flag

In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court of Maryland upheld the Child Victims Act (CVA) of 2023 with a 4-3 ruling, confirming its constitutionality. The CVA eliminates prior restrictions that barred many survivors of child sexual abuse from pursuing justice in adulthood.

Attorney General Anthony G. Brown, who played a pivotal role in defending the statute, responded to the decision stating, “Today’s decision by the Supreme Court of Maryland confirms that the passage of time will not prevent survivors from seeking justice for sexual abuse they suffered as children.”

This ruling marks a significant advancement in Maryland’s legal landscape, ensuring that survivors can seek justice regardless of when the abuse occurred.
