McConnellsburg’s boys and girls soccer teams opened their seasons with wins over Southern Fulton on Aug. 28, while the boys followed with another victory over North Star on Aug. 31.
The McConnellsburg boys defeated Southern Fulton 8-2 in an Inter-County Conference matchup. The Spartans scored six unanswered goals in the first half, with Hoyt Glenn recording a hat trick before halftime. Callen Mellott scored twice in the opening half and Lincoln McKelvy added another goal.
Southern Fulton scored seven minutes into the second half, but Glenn answered a minute later with his fourth goal. Ethan Lang later scored McConnellsburg’s final goal before Southern Fulton converted a penalty kick for the final margin. Mellott finished with three assists, Grady Shives had two and McKelvy added one.
The McConnellsburg girls also controlled their opener against Southern Fulton, earning a 9-0 shutout. The Lady Spartans led 4-0 at halftime before adding five goals in the second half. Gemma Gordon scored four goals, Marin DeShong scored three and Lela Revercomb added one, along with a Southern Fulton own goal. DeShong also contributed four assists.
The McConnellsburg boys returned to action Aug. 31 and defeated North Star 10-4. The Spartans led 6-2 at halftime and scored four more times in the second half. McKelvy led the offense with four goals, Glenn scored three, Lang added two and Mellott scored once. The win moved McConnellsburg to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in ICC play.
