Meritus Internal Medicine Physician Training Program Receives Full Accreditation, Begins Recruiting

Following its newly awarded national accreditation, Meritus Health is pleased to announce that it is launching an Internal Medicine Residency Program. The new program will begin recruiting its inaugural class of physician residents in late October and formally start operations in July 2027.

This is the fourth graduate medical education program Meritus offers, joining Family Medicine, Psychiatry and General Surgery.

“Our mission is to train compassionate, practice-ready internists dedicated to improving the health of our community,” said Program Director Dr. Oksana Karpov. “With the shortage of trained physicians locally and nationally, we view our job as key to the future of medicine in the region and beyond.”

The highly selective three-year program will welcome 13 residents per year and provide comprehensive clinical experiences throughout the health system.

Doctors who practice internal medicine specialize in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and chronic conditions in those 18 and older, often serving as a patient’s primary care provider and coordinating overall health care.

Residents will train at Meritus Medical Center, which serves more than 200,000 people across Maryland, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

“Meritus’ location provides a rich clinical tapestry,” Dr. Karpov said. “The residents will manage a high-acuity mix of complex chronic pathologies, acute medical emergencies and conditions spanning rural, suburban and medically underserved demographics.”

The curriculum includes rotations in intensive care, cardiology, pulmonology, gastroenterology, hematology/oncology, infectious disease and addiction medicine, among others, along with elective opportunities tailored to individual career goals.

Program participants will also partner with the Meritus School of Osteopathic Medicine, working on research projects and teaching medical students.

Internal medicine residents may pursue one of three career interest tracks, including primary care, hospital medicine or fellowship preparation, while gaining extensive experience in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

“This program represents an important milestone for Meritus and for healthcare in our region,” Dr. Karpov said. “By educating outstanding internal medicine physicians, we can help expand access to high-quality care for generations to come.”

Who We Are

The Franklin County Free Press, established by Vicky Taylor in 2019, emerged as a beacon of local journalism for the residents of Franklin County. Under Vicky's leadership, it quickly became an essential source of news, particularly at a time when major newspaper publications were increasingly overlooking local coverage.

On January 1, 2022, the torch was passed to Nathan Neil and his firm, Neil Publishing, LLC. Neil, a local entrepreneur with multiple thriving businesses in Chambersburg, shares Vicky's fervent commitment to both the community and the world of local journalism.

Rooted in the heart of Franklin County and powered by its residents, the Franklin County Free Press continues to bridge the gap, ensuring that the local stories, events, and issues that matter most to the community remain in the spotlight.
