NHTSA Reports 11th Death Linked to Defective Replacement Air Bag Inflator

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has reported an 11th death linked to a ruptured defective Chinese replacement air bag inflator.

The latest death is the first involving an inflator installed in a Chevrolet Equinox. The previous 10 deaths and three severe injuries involved Chevrolet Malibu and Hyundai Sonata vehicles.

NHTSA advises people buying or driving used vehicles to obtain a vehicle history report. If a vehicle was previously involved in a crash in which an air bag deployed, the agency recommends having it inspected immediately by a reputable mechanic to verify that the replacement air bag is legitimate.
