NHTSA Shares Safety Guidance for Drivers Facing Roadside Emergencies

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued safety reminders as heavy snow and rain are expected to create hazardous travel conditions for early holiday travelers.

If a vehicle becomes stopped or stalled on the road during severe weather, NHTSA advises motorists to take the following actions:

Stay With Your Car:
Drivers should remain with their vehicle and avoid overexerting themselves outside.

Let Your Car Be Seen:
Motorists are encouraged to place bright markers on the antenna or windows and keep the interior dome light on to increase visibility.

Run Your Car Periodically:
The exhaust pipe should be checked to ensure it is clear of snow. The vehicle should be run only long enough to maintain warmth.

Carbon Monoxide Caution:
Drivers are advised not to run their car for long periods with the windows up or in an enclosed space to prevent carbon monoxide buildup.

NHTSA encourages travelers to review these safety steps before heading out in winter weather conditions.
