Local college sports: Nittany Lions topple Phoenix

The Nittany Lions from Penn State Abington toppled Chambersburg’s Phoenix men’s soccer team Tuesday in a non-conference game in Abington. Despite a valiant effort, the Phoenix (0-5, 0-0 CSAC) were defeated by the Nittany Lions (3-3, 0-1 UEC) by a final score of 3-0. 

How It Happened

Sophomore Connor Bowers (Hagerstown, MD, North Hagerstown High School) went straight to work in this one, firing off a shot on goal in the fifth minute of play. Shortly after, in the 18th minute of the match, freshman Colin Castro (Chambersburg, PA, Chambersburg Area Senior) managed to get a shot off that sailed to the right of the goal. Abington notched two, quick goals in the 41st and 43rd minute of play that put them ahead 2-0 going into halftime. In the second half, the Nittany Lions extended their lead to 3-0. In the 67th minute, senior Brandom Rios (Carolina, Puerto Rico, Colegio Bautista De Carolina) put a shot on goal that was saved. The Phoenix could not overcome the deficit, falling to Penn State Abington by a final score of 3-0. 

Inside the Box Score

Junior Billy Merk (Macungie, PA, Lehigh Carbon Community College) tallied a total of two saves. BowersCastro, and Rios led Wilson offensively in the shot department, finishing with one each.

The Phoenix makes their home debut Thursday, taking on the Bearcats of Saint Vincent College (1-6, 0-0 PAC) at 4 p.m.
