Open letter to community

An open letter to the community and members of the Greater Chambersburg Chamber of Commerce from its president Steve Christian:

Last week, new mitigation mandates that prohibited indoor dining, limited indoor/outdoor gatherings and introduced capacity limits for businesses were imposed by Governor Wolf and Secretary Levine. These measures are to remain in effect until January 4, 2021.

We understand the health of our fellow citizens is at risk with the rise in Covid-19 cases and the straining of local medical resources. However, to make this announcement without forewarning to those who have invested time and resources in preparation to serve their customers safely for the holiday season is unfair to an industry that has been tightly regulated throughout the pandemic.

Furthermore, enacting these restrictions without any stimulus package or additional programs available to help the impacted businesses survive can be crushing to the owners/operators of these facilities.

RELATED: Small businesses hurting

In short, we need you.

We are asking our community to answer the call to help your fellow small business owners survive. You can help in these ways:

  • Contact your congressman and ask them to support a bi-partisan stimulus package.
  • Order take-out to support the restaurant owners who have worked incredibly hard even prior to Covid-19.
  • Renew your gym memberships even if you cannot go in person.
  • Support small businesses any way that you can.

PA Chamber President Gene Barr issued a statement in last week’s press release“Today’s announcement from the Wolf administration may not necessarily improve the Commonwealth’s public health situation, but it will certainly wreak economic devastation upon numerous businesses. The orders were announced without any consultation or feedback from the state’s business community.

“Among the hardest hit industries throughout this pandemic has been the restaurant industry. Yet again, restaurant owners and industry workers who have already been through so much are forced to adhere to mandates that for many, will shut their doors for good. Unfortunately, banning indoor dining will have the adverse effect of driving more people to private gatherings where there is little to no sanitizing, social distancing or mask wearing.”

We agree with the PA Chamber’s statement. We strongly support Congressman Joyce, Senator Casey and Senator Toomey to unite in a bi-partisan stimulus package that will provide relief to our business community. Our small businesses, hospitality/tourism industry and non-profits are in dire need of assistance. We hope the war on Covid-19 will end soon, but many of our local businesses may not last to see it through.

Please continue following CDC guidelines to keep your loved ones safe, and thank you for everything you are doing to support our community.
