Do We Sit Back or Do We Unite?

This is the question I asked several residents in Hall Manor, Harrisburg, PA. Without hesitation, every single one answered: we unite. The old saying, “divided we fall, united we stand,” couldn’t be more relevant right now.

We are facing a critical moment. The GOP leaders in Congress have proposed a reconciliation bill that will impact the lives of millions of Americans, especially those who are underrepresented, unheard, and already struggling. Among the proposed cuts is the largest cut to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) – in history. SNAP helps over 40 million people, including children, seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities, put food on the table every month (USDA, 2024).

As a previous recipient of SNAP benefits, I can personally attest to how much of a lifeline this program was for my family during difficult times. SNAP isn’t a handout; it’s a hand up. It ensures nutrition, and helps families bridge the gap in times of financial hardship.
With a rescission package on the table that threatens to slash critical aid, it’s time for us to raise our voices—not lower them. We must unite and use our collective power to oppose harmful legislation that could take years, if not decades, to reverse.
I’ve directly advocated for SNAP by urging lawmakers such as Scott Perry, to stand firm against cuts. Protecting this vital program requires all of us to act.

The time to act is now. Tell Congress to reject this disastrous bill.

Rooted in the heart of Franklin County and powered by its residents, the Franklin County Free Press continues to bridge the gap, ensuring that the local stories, events, and issues that matter most to the community remain in the spotlight.
