Pennsylvania Treasurer Stacy Garrity announced an expanded partnership between the Pennsylvania Treasury’s PA Achieving a Better Life Experience Savings Program (PA ABLE) and Special Olympics Pennsylvania (SOPA). The announcement took place at Villanova University during SOPA’s Fall Festival.

Through this partnership, Treasury and SOPA will collaborate on outreach and education to increase awareness of PA ABLE accounts among individuals with disabilities and their families. Treasury will have access to SOPA events statewide, and PA ABLE branding will be included at these events.

SOPA provides year-round sports training and competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. More than 1,700 athletes, coaches, and Unified Partners are participating in sports such as powerlifting, bocce, soccer, volleyball, flag football, and long-distance running and walking at the Fall Festival.

PA ABLE accounts allow eligible individuals with disabilities to save money tax-free for expenses such as housing, education, assistive technology, and daily needs without affecting eligibility for benefits. Currently, eligibility requires a disability onset before age 26. Starting in January 2026, eligibility will expand to include individuals whose disability began before age 46, including an estimated one million Veterans.

Treasurer Garrity has reduced account fees for PA ABLE participants six times since taking office. PA ABLE is currently the fifth-largest ABLE program in the United States.

More information about PA ABLE, eligibility, and how to open an account is available at paable.gov, by emailing info@paable.gov, or by calling 855-529-2253.

On January 1, 2022, the torch was passed to Nathan Neil and his firm, Neil Publishing, LLC. Neil, a local entrepreneur with multiple thriving businesses in Chambersburg, shares Vicky's fervent commitment to both the community and the world of local journalism.

Rooted in the heart of Franklin County and powered by its residents, the Franklin County Free Press continues to bridge the gap, ensuring that the local stories, events, and issues that matter most to the community remain in the spotlight.
