PennDOT Opens 20th EV Charging Station, Advances to Next Phase of NEVI Program

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced the opening of the state’s 20th Electric Vehicle (EV) charging station funded by the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program. The site is at Sheetz on Freeport Road in Pittsburgh near Interstate 76, Exit 48. The NEVI-funded network in Pennsylvania represents approximately $11.5 million in federal investment.

Since the first NEVI station opened in Pennsylvania, the network has delivered more than 30,000 charging sessions, powering over an estimated 3.5 million miles and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by more than 1.7 million pounds (750 metric tons).

Pennsylvania is the first state to receive a Full Build-Out Certification under federal NEVI guidance issued August 11, 2025. PennDOT submitted an updated Pennsylvania NEVI State Plan and a second request for Full Build-Out Certification to the Federal Highway Administration on August 27, 2025. The State Plan was approved September 5, 2025, and Full Build-Out Certification was issued September 22, 2025.

With this certification, PennDOT will move to the next stage of the NEVI program, “Corridor Connections.” PennDOT anticipates releasing the Corridor Connections Funding Opportunity on or before October 7, 2025, with plans to solicit about 24 projects and up to $20 million in available funding. The opportunity is expected to cover more than 1,000 miles and include segments of:

  • U.S. 6, 15, 22, 62, 119, 219, 220, 222, 322, 422
  • PA Route 28, Route 43, Route 283
  • I-78, I-81, I-90

The submission period will close January 30, 2026, at 5:00 PM ET.

Quote from PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll: “Thanks to our team’s diligent work in 2023 and 2024, and Governor Shapiro’s persistent efforts to secure Congressionally appropriated funding, we’re in a position to continue making EVs more accessible for PA travelers. That quick action ensured Pennsylvania could adapt to national program changes while locking in investments for Pennsylvania.”
