PennDOT Opens Applications for $80M Transportation Alternatives Program

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced the opening of the 2025 Transportation Alternatives (TA) Set-Aside program under the Federal Highway Administration’s Surface Block Grant Program. Applications will be accepted from July 14 through October 31, 2025.

The Shapiro Administration will award a total of $80 million to support projects that expand transportation options and improve safe access to schools throughout the state.

A webinar for potential applicants will be held Wednesday, July 9 at 10:00 a.m. The session will cover the application process and answer questions from interested project sponsors, including municipalities, transit agencies, public land agencies, regional transportation authorities, school districts, and other eligible entities. More information and the webinar link are available on the TASA webpage.

The TA Set-Aside program funds a variety of infrastructure improvements such as pedestrian and bicycle facilities, public transit access, safe routes to school, environmental mitigation, historic preservation, vegetation management, and trail projects with a transportation purpose. It also supports vulnerable road user safety assessment projects.

Draft applications must be submitted to PennDOT district offices by September 5, 2025. Comments and selections from large Metropolitan Planning Organizations and district offices are due by January 23, 2026. A statewide project selection committee will meet in March 2026 to recommend projects for funding.

Program guidance, procedures, and contact information are available through the TA Set-Aside Program page. Potential sponsors can direct questions to RA-pdTASA@pa.gov.

Details on PennDOT infrastructure work and ongoing projects can be found at projects-near-you.

Rooted in the heart of Franklin County and powered by its residents, the Franklin County Free Press continues to bridge the gap, ensuring that the local stories, events, and issues that matter most to the community remain in the spotlight.
