The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is reminding drivers to prepare their vehicles for winter conditions before snowfall begins.
PennDOT recommends having a mechanic inspect key components, including brakes, the battery, hoses, and belts. Drivers are also advised to:
- Ensure all fluid levels are full.
- Check windshield wipers for streaking and consider winter wiper blades.
- Confirm the heater and defroster are working properly.
- Make sure the vehicle’s radio functions so weather and traffic reports can be received.
- Verify that all vehicle lights are operational.
- Check tire inflation and tread depth.
- Use dedicated snow tires or carry tire chains in areas prone to heavy snow; all-weather tires should be rated for mud and snow.
- Contact a mechanic immediately if any issues arise.
