The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has issued a quarantine order limiting animal movements following confirmed cases of New World Screwworm in Texas and New Mexico.
There are currently no cases of New World Screwworm in Pennsylvania in livestock, pets, wildlife or humans, according to the department.
The department said the current risk remains low but is urging farmers and pet owners to strengthen biosecurity and monitor animals for suspicious wounds containing larvae. The warning applies to livestock, pets and other warm-blooded animals.
Maggots found in trash or decaying organic matter are not considered an indication of New World Screwworm.
Animal owners who suspect signs of New World Screwworm should contact a local veterinarian, the State Veterinarian’s Office at 717-772-2852, or USDA Animal Health.
