Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday is marking the two-year anniversary of the Office of Attorney General’s Organized Retail Crime Section, which investigates coordinated theft and fraud cases across Pennsylvania.
Since launching in July 2024, the section has opened more than 170 investigations, made more than 100 arrests, served more than 222 search warrants, and recovered millions of dollars in stolen property and counterfeit merchandise.
The section serves as an investigative hub for large-scale theft-related crimes that may cross municipal, county and state lines. It works with law enforcement agencies, retailers and industry leaders to identify criminal networks, connect related retail theft incidents and prosecute defendants.
This week, Sunday joined Walmart representatives, other retailers, local law enforcement and members of the Legislature at a Walmart in Cranberry Township to discuss organized retail crime and cooperation between businesses and law enforcement.
The Organized Retail Crime Section was launched July 1, 2024, following the passage of Act 42 of 2023, which established a framework for the Office of Attorney General to investigate and prosecute organized retail crime.
The section works with retailers to identify patterns of criminal activity and develop cases involving coordinated retail theft. It also shares intelligence with local and state law enforcement when investigations cross jurisdictional boundaries.
Its investigations have included theft crews operating across multiple counties, coordinated thefts targeting retailers throughout Pennsylvania and the resale of stolen merchandise through online marketplaces and other channels.
