Pennsylvania Senator Dave McCormick today heralded the return of Pennsylvanian Marc Fogel from Russian custody, extending his gratitude to President Donald Trump and his administration for their efforts in securing Fogel’s release. Fogel, a schoolteacher from Butler, Pennsylvania, had been detained in Russia since 2021 and was recently freed, allowing him to return to American soil.

Senator McCormick has been a staunch advocate for Fogel, engaging in extensive efforts to push for his safe return. “I am thrilled that Marc Fogel is finally coming home after years of being wrongfully held in Russia,” stated McCormick. He recounted his commitment to the Fogel family since meeting Marc’s mother at a rally last July, praising the administration’s dedication to resolving the case.

Throughout his tenure, McCormick has actively worked to highlight Fogel’s plight, including discussing the matter with key officials such as then-Secretary of State nominee Marco Rubio and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz. Additionally, McCormick spearheaded a bipartisan letter, co-signed by Senator John Fetterman and 11 members of the Pennsylvania House delegation, urging the use of all available U.S. resources to expedite Fogel’s release.

Marc Fogel was initially detained at Sheremetyevo Airport in 2021, receiving a 14-year sentence in 2022 by a Russian court, which left him without a clear path home until now. His release, achieved just 22 days into President Trump’s term, marks a significant diplomatic victory.

Senator McCormick expressed profound relief and joy over the resolution of the case, noting the emotional reunion ahead for Fogel and his 95-year-old mother, Mafa. “It is a blessing that this day has finally come,” McCormick remarked, reflecting on the successful culmination of international advocacy efforts.
