CHAMBERSBURG — The Wilson College baseball team was in action again Sunday, hosting the Crusaders of Christendom College in a nonconference doubleheader.
The Phoenix (12-5, 2-0 CSAC) took down the Crusaders (9-10, 4-0 USCAA) in both games with scores of 8-4 and 14-4.
Game 1:
Freshman Ethan Phillips (Stewartstown, Pa., Kennard-Dale) got the starting nod for Wilson in game one and went on to leave the top of the first inning with no runs.
In the bottom half of the inning, freshman Juan Rosario (Hollywood, Fla., Hollywood Hills) led off and reached base on a double to center field.
Freshman Nick Quinn (Odenton, Md., St. Mary’s) drove him in on the next at-bat, a doubling to left field and bringing the score to 1-0 Phoenix.
A few batters later, freshman Grant Astle (Port Deposit, Md., The John Carroll School) was able to drive Quinn in on a sacrifice fly, tipping the score to 2-0.
Christendom responded in the top of the second, scoring two runs on three hits and one error, knotting things up at two apiece.
In the bottom half of the second inning, freshman Joseph Cofer (Dumfries, Va., Forest Park) got things started with a homer to left field, pushing Wilson back in front 3-2.
Later in the inning, Rosario hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored another run, bringing the score 4-2 in favor of the Phoenix.
Wilson went on to take game one by a final score of 8-4.
Inside the Box Score: Junior Joshua Harvey (Perth, Australia) earned his first win of the season, pitching 2.2 inings and giving up three hits and 2 runs. Freshman Trystan Housman (Harrisburg, Pa., Bishop McDevitt) earned the save. Freshmen Hunter Cheek (San Antonio, Texas, Smithson Valley) and Eli Klopp (College Park, Md., DeMatha Catholic) led the Phoenix. going 3-3 and 2-2, respectively. Wilson wrapped up game one scoring 8 runs on 13 hits and three errors while holding their opponent to four runs on six hits and zero errors.
Game 2:
Freshman Brenden Johnson (Jefferson, Md., Brunswick) started the second game for the Phoenix.
The runs came early and often, as the Phoenix got things started right away.
In the bottom of the first, Quinn hit a double to left field that drove in a run.
A few batters later, Freshman Cole Rinehart (Boonsboro, Md., Boonsboro) doubled to left and drove in two runs.
All together Wilson was able to score four runs on four hits in the inning, making the score 4-0 after one inning of play.
Picking up play in the bottom of the fifth inning, with the score 6-1, the Phoenix would add more runs.
Rosario drove in three runs, clearing the bases and scoring off several Crusader errors, bringing the score to 9-1 for Wilson.
Later in the bottom of the sixth, the Phoenix scored five runs off three hits and four errors, including an inside the park home run by Cofer that would end the game 14-4 after six innings of play.
Inside the Box Score:Johnson earned his first win of the season pitching four innings, giving up three hits and one run.
Cofer finished 1-2 with two RBIs on an inside the park home run, his second home run of the day.
Rinehart went 2-3 with three RBIs. Quinn went 2-3 with one RBI and Rosario went 3-2.
Wilson finished the game scoring 14 runs on 14 hits with no errors while the Crusaders finished scoring four runs on seven hits and seven errors.
Up Next: The Phoenix will face off against Clarks Summit University (2-12, 0-2 CSAC) in a conference game in Scranton, Pa. Wednesday, April 10 at 3:00 p.m.
