Patriot Federal Credit Union is warning consumers about “Toad Attacks,” a type of phone-based scam in which criminals impersonate trusted organizations to obtain personal or financial information.
According to Patriot Federal, scammers place calls or send texts posing as companies such as Amazon, PayPal, Apple, Microsoft, retailers, or financial institutions. Callers often claim there is an urgent issue with an account and pressure individuals to act immediately.
Red flags of these scams include unexpected calls or texts about purchases that were not made, pressure to call back right away, and requests for remote access to devices or communication through apps such as WhatsApp or Signal.
Patriot Federal stated it will never ask for an online banking password, debit card PIN, or one-time passcodes over the phone.
Consumers who are unsure about a call are advised to hang up and contact Patriot Federal Credit Union directly at 888-777-9982.
