CHAMBERSBURG — Almost 800 people raised over $28,000 for SCCAPS’s Circles program in the 9th Annual Race Against Poverty last week.
Held Friday, June 7, in downtown Chambersburg, the annual Race helps many families in Franklin County, where organizers say one in five families cannot afford basic living expenses.
A total of 762 people participated in the race, with 631 taking part in a 5K run/walk and 131 taking part in two races geared specifically for the younger set.
All of the race entry fees go to support Circles, a SCCAP program that works with at-risk families overcome poverty. For the past five years in a row, people in this program have won a statewide self-sufficiency award.
This year’s race had a great turnout of runners and spectators, according too organizers.
The winners were:
- Team challenge: Appalachian Running Company
- Fastest running duo: Chris and Cadie Kiser
- Best Dressed: Paul Bunyan/Babe the blue ox (their real names were not available at the time)
- Men’s 5k run: 3rd place: Nick Monhiem, 2nd place: Weber Long, 1st place: Fan Green- time 16:31
- Women’s 5k run: 3rd place: Camy Kiser, 2nd place: Cadie Kiser, 1st place: Abby Yourkavetich- time 18:49
