Shippensburg University sports: Raiders softball pitcher’s duels
Shippensburg University’s Raiders softball team engaged in a couple of pitcher’s duels with visiting IUP on Tuesday, splitting a non-conference doubleheader with the Crimson Hawks. SU won Game 1, 2-1, while IUP won Game 2, 3-0, on a sunny and warm day at Robb Field.
Shippensburg (12-12) and IUP (10-8) combined for just two extra-base hits (one double for each team). SU’s Game 1 RBIs came on a fourth-inning sacrifice fly by Taylor Radziewicz (Felton, Pa./Red Lion) and a fifth-inning single by Hannah Marsteller (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend).
The Raiders got a complete-game victory from freshman Emma Flattery (Macomb, Mich./Dakota), who improved her record to 4-0. Flattery allowed one run on four hits, walking three and striking out four in the 2-1 Game 1 victory.
In Game 2, freshman Maelynn Leber (Wrightsville, Pa./Eastern York) entered the circle in relief in the first inning and finished the game. Her only two runs allowed came on a two-out single in the seventh inning. Leber pitched 6.1 innings and allowed five hits, walked two, and struck out seven.
Marsteller finished the doubleheader with three hits, while freshman Taylor Myers (Fayetteville, Pa./Chambersburg Area) had two singles and a sacrifice. Alyssa Nehlen (Pulaski, Pa./West Middlesex) returned to action and doubled in Game 1, scoring on Radziewicz’s sacrifice fly.
IUP’s Bella Bucy scattered five singles and two walks while striking out four in Game 2 to record a shutout. It marks the first time this season that Shippensburg was held scoreless in a seven-inning game. The victory snapped a 10-game losing streak for the Crimson Hawks against the Raiders.
SCHEDULE CHANGE: Shippensburg will host Kutztown at 1 p.m. Thursday at Robb Field. The doubleheader was moved up from Saturday to avoid possible inclement weather.
