Shippensburg University sports: Raiders sweep series
The Raiders softball team completed a season series sweep of Lock Haven on Monday, defeating the host Bald Eagles by scores of 12-4 (six innings) and 11-2 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader at Lawrence Field.
How it happened
Shippensburg (9-9, 8-8 PSAC East) cranked out 32 hits on Monday, including 18 in the opener. All nine Raiders had multiple hits, including five singles and a walk for freshman Taylor Myers (Fayetteville, Pa./Chambersburg Area). Hannah Marsteller (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) reached base six times as well, hitting a home run in both games, drawing three walks and scoring four runs.
Marsteller, named the PSAC Eastern Division Athlete of the Week during the doubleheader, extended her hitting streak to a school-record 23 consecutive games. She has at least one hit in all 18 games this season and had a hit in each of the last five games of the 2020 season. She currently leads the PSAC in extra-base hits (16), RBIs (28) and total bases (60).
Freshman Maelynn Leber (Wrightsville, Pa./Eastern York) went 4-for-8 at the plate, including a three-run homer to center field. She also pitched a complete game in Game 2, allowing two runs (one earned) and striking out three.
Lacey Hunter (Centreville, Va./Centreville) slugged her first career home run in the seventh inning of Game 2, finishing the day with four hits, three RBIs, and two runs scored. Hunter and Myers each stole a base as well.
Freshman Brianna Small (Rockledge, Fla./Eau Gallie) got the Game 1 win in the circle, allowing four runs on six hits in six innings and striking out six.
Game 1: Shippensburg 12, Lock Haven 4 (6 innings)
A two-run home run by Marsteller in the first inning gave the Raiders a lead they would not relinquish. The score was 3-2 in the fifth when SU scored four – highlighted by Leber’s three-run home run with two outs.
A five-run sixth inning led to the run rule and a shortened game. Taylor Radziewicz (Felton, Pa./Red Lion) singled home DeFeo, who tripled. Courtney Coy (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg Area) hit a two-run double, Jones hit an RBI-single, and another run scored on an error.
Game 2: Shippensburg 11, Lock Haven 2
SU took a 2-0 lead in the second. Cori Ritter (Shermans Dale, Pa./West Perry) tripled and came home to score on a Jones sacrifice fly. Hunter singled, stole second, and scored on an error.
The Raiders added two more in the third on RBIs from Ritter and Leber, and one in the fourth after Myers singled, stole second, and scored on a DeFeo single.
