CHAMBERSBURG — A series of fights Wednesday afternoon in several locations in the borough spilled over into Chambersburg Hospital’s emergency room. Police are calling the situation that resulted in a temporary lockdown of the ER a riot.
Police said in a news release issued Thursday afternoon that last night’s incident involved eight or 10 people from three separate fights earlier in the afternoon.
All of those involved were known to each other and showed up at the hospital for treatment of injuries they had suffered earlier. Police said the “riot” did not compromise the hospital’s security or safety of other patients.
“The public should not be afraid to go to (WellSpan’s) Chambersburg Hospital for medical treatment,” police said. “This was an isolated case involving specific groups of individuals who knew each other.”
Police were called to the hospital at around 4:30 p.m. when people involved in earlier fights began showing up for treatment. While officers were there, more individuals from each side began coming in.
Police verified that three separate fights at different locations around the borough broke out at about 4 p.m. Many of those involved went to the hospital emergency room for treatment.
At the hospital, they began fighting again. This time there were more of them in one place, so the fight was larger.
During the incident, the ER was put on lockdown until the fight was contained and the participants were separated and detained.
Cameron Keith, 22, was arrested for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Samantha Myers, 21, Chambersburg, was arrested for disorderly conduct. More charges are expected to be filed in the case.
Police want the public to know this was an isolated case involving specific groups of individuals who knew each other.
Any information regarding this incident should be forwarded to the Chambersburg Police Department at 717-264-4131.
Updates regarding additional arrests or charges will be given as information becomes available.
