Roger E Harbaugh, of Fayetteville, PA (although like all good truck drivers, “he’s been everywhere”), passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, June 9, 2020, following a massive heart attack.
Born in Waynesboro, PA, on January 4, 1955. He was son to Robert E Harbaugh (Avon Park, FL) and the late Louise M. Shindledecker and his step-father, Gerald Caufman (Waynesboro, PA).
Roger was a graduate of Waynesboro Senior High School with the Class of 1973.
He was a loyal sport participant and fan to the Pittsburg Steelers, Baltimore Orioles and the Penn State Nittany Lions. In High school and beyond, he played many sports. Most recently he loved playing golf with his friends and was a Sand Bagger on the FNSO Golf League in Dillsburg.
As an EMT, he was an instrumental part of establishing the Fairfield Ambulance Corp. He was a lifetime member of the Fairfield Fire Company.
He was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, Fairfield, but felt closest to His Savior in the mountains.
He enjoyed life with family and friends, was quick witted and kept them all laughing. He loved deer hunting, feeding the birds, working with his flowers, improving his golf swing, preparing one of his signature dishes, but most of all – sharing a story with you.
Roger finished this part of his journey strong by becoming a donor through The Gift of Life, so others may benefit and live a more fulfilling life.
He married Sallie K. (Foster) on July 13, 1994. She and his children are grieving his parting.
He was father to Ryan E. Harbaugh (Crystal) of South Mountain, PA. Lee R. Hamner (Micah) of New Orleans, LA and Maggie Hamner (Tyree) of Fayetteville, PA.
He was Grandfather to Jamae, J’Leeon, Kristyn, Austin, Hunter and Kelsey.
He took the job of Big Brother to nine younger siblings very seriously. Sherry Harbaugh of Nebraska, Jerry Caufman (Shirley) of Greencastle, Terry Caufman (Vicki) of Fairfield, Lowell Harbaugh (Waynesboro), Melinda Kerley (Leroy), of Waynesboro, Albert Harbaugh of Waynesboro, Gwenda Ingream (Scott) of Chambersburg, Lisa Groft (Fawn) of Delaware and Lionel Caufman (Poo) of Fairfield. He was proud of and loved his many nieces and nephews including Henry the duck.
In addition to his mother, Roger was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Aaliyah and Boston; and by a niece, Amber.
A Celebration of Roger’s life will be on June 28, 1 p.m. at Saint Thomas Sportsman’s Association, 595 Apple Way, St. Thomas, PA pending Covid-19 restrictions have been lifted.
