Ronald “Ron” L Portner obituary 1947~2022


Ronald “Ron” L Portner, 75, of Fayetteville passed peacefully at his home on June 17, 2022 after a four year battle with cancer.

Born February 7, 1947 in Waynesboro, PA he was the son of the late Lester and Mildred Portner.

Ron attended Waynesboro Area Senior High School. He joined the United States Army in 1965 and served with the 82nd Airborne Division. He did three tours in Vietnam and was honorably discharged in 1968.

He worked at Beck Manufacturing, Waynesboro for 33 years, retiring in 2009. Ron was an avid hunter of whitetail in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Virginia.

He was a member of the South Mountain Fish and Game Club where he spent many hours at the shooting range. He enjoyed attending gun shows and gun auctions. In the past, he enjoyed boating and fishing at Raystown Lake and the Potomac River.

In the 70’s he was a member of the 18th PA Cavalry Civil War Reenactment Unit. He participated in the 1976 Bicentennial Battle of Gettysburg. He was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church of Chambersburg.

Ron is survived by his wife of 41 years, Pauline “Polly” Lehman, whom he married on December 24, 1980. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a sister, Donna Dockweiler; his nieces Renee Welsh, Opal and Amber Dockweiler all of Waynesboro and three great nephews. He is also survived by three sister-in-laws, Judy Chamberlin, husband Jeff of Shippensburg, Lorrie Smedley, husband Dick of Fayettville and Loretta Tharp of Fayetteville, along with two nieces and two nephews and seven great nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a niece, Tiffany Dockweiler.

A special thanks to the wonderful nurses and aides of SpiriTrust Lutheran Hospice, who have been a blessing as they walked this journey with us.

Funeral services will be held on Friday June 24, 2002 at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Rd, Chambersburg, PA, with Pastor David Kiel officiating.

Interment will follow at Norland Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by the honor guard of Charles Nitterhouse V.F.W. Post #1599, Chambersburg. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
