SHIP U. Baseball drops rubber game to No. 4 Catawba

In North Carolina, Shippensburg University’s baseball team concluded their season-opening series with a 13-1 loss against the No. 4 ranked Catawba College on Sunday.

Shippensburg’s team, now standing at 1-2 for the season, struggled against Catawba’s pitcher Casey Gouge. Gouge, a formidable left-hander, limited the Raiders to just one run on four hits over six innings. Despite the tough competition, senior Carter Hinds from Warrington, PA, showcased a strong performance, hitting 2-for-4, including a double, and concluding the weekend with a total of six hits against Catawba.

Catawba, improving their record to 4-3, dominated early in the game by scoring 11 runs in the first four innings. Their aggressive gameplay was highlighted by seven singles and capitalized on the 12 walks provided by Shippensburg’s pitchers. The significant scoring drive included a two-run double by Cole Hales in the sixth inning.

Shippensburg’s pitchers struggled to contain Catawba’s offense, with the team cycling through six pitchers during the game, none lasting more than two innings. Graduate Eric Bohenek made his return to the mound after missing the 2024 season due to injury.

On the offensive front, Shippensburg saw freshman Will Oates and Carter Hinds team up to score the Raiders’ lone run in the fifth inning.

The Raiders are looking to rebound from this setback as they prepare for a 10-game homestand beginning with a doubleheader against St. Michaels on Friday. The first game is scheduled to start at 12 p.m.
