SHIP U. Women’s Soccer scores twice in season-opening draw with West Virginia Wesleyan, 2-2

The Shippensburg University women’s soccer team opened its season Thursday with a 2-2 draw against West Virginia Wesleyan at David See Field.

West Virginia Wesleyan (0-0-1) took the lead in the opening minute on a header by Tessa Grisez off a Natalie Carlock corner kick.

Shippensburg (0-0-1) tied the match in the 23rd minute when Ashley Hughes scored off a cross from Kamryn Runkle.

The Raiders took a 2-1 lead in the 33rd minute. Following a corner kick, Cailin Spelman collected the ball near the edge of the box and scored into the top left corner.

Shippensburg remained ahead until the 87th minute, when West Virginia Wesleyan’s Ayan Ahmed scored on a header following a long free kick.

The Raiders recorded 14 shots on goal compared with five for West Virginia Wesleyan and held a 17-4 advantage in corner kicks.

West Virginia Wesleyan goalkeeper Zoe Brown made 12 saves. Shippensburg goalkeeper Kirstin Brown recorded three saves.

Shippensburg will play Lackawanna on the road Saturday at 1 p.m. The match will count toward Shippensburg’s overall record and season statistics but will not count in the conference standings or NCAA record.

Ruth volunteered at Gospel Tide, Shook Home and the House of Grace. She worked at the Chambersburg School District fore over 25 years.

Ann B. Thomas 1938-2026

Ann graduated from Biglerville High School and went to work at Knouse Foods. She worked there most of her life having numerous roles there.
