Shippensburg : Softball Splits Home Finale to Kutztown

On a sunny Friday at Robb Field, a matchup between the top two teams in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division, the Shippensburg University softball team posted a split against No. 22 Kutztown, dropping the opener 2-1 and then winning Game 2, 6-2.

What Happened

Game 1: Kutztown 2, Shippensburg 1
Game 1 was a pitcher’s duel, with Kutztown scoring first off a Raider error in the top of the third inning. Shippensburg answered back late in the bottom of the sixth to tie the score. Myers singled to left field and scored off an RBI-single by Minney. The Golden Bears took the lead in the top of the seventh off another Raider fielding error that eventually gave Kutztown the 2-1 victory.
Freshman Alicia Ball started in the circle for the Raiders and threw a complete game, striking out seven Golden Bears. Kutztown’s Bridget Bailey, the reigning PSAC Eastern Division Pitcher of the Week, threw a complete game and struck out eight Raiders.
Game 2: Shippensburg 6, Kutztown 2
Kutztown took a one-run lead in the first inning on an RBI-groundout. Shippensburg answered back with three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Minney singled through the left side and Nehlen forced a walk to put two Raiders in scoring position. Both ended up scoring the first two runs on a Brumbaugh two-run single to right-center field. The Raiders scored one more run from an RBI-single to center field by Myers that scored Johnson.  
SU scored two more runs in the third inning. Marsteller singled up the middle and Minney drew a walk; both ended up scoring from a two-run single by Johnson to left field that gave the Raiders a 5-1 lead.  
SU got its sixth and final run in the fourth on an RBI-single by Marsteller.
Redshirt-sophomore Maddie Uschock started in the circle for the Raiders and threw 3.0 innings. She allowed six hits, no walks and struck out two Golden Bears. Sophomore Emma Flattery entered in relief and threw 4.0 innings and got the win for the Raiders, her fifth straight. She allowed three hits and struck out two.
