South Mountain Golf Course is open again after narrowly avoiding permanent closure earlier this year.
The golf course, located on state-owned land in Michaux State Forest, was previously at risk of closing after the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources initially planned not to renew its lease. The department had considered using the land for a new visitor center for Michaux State Forest.
The proposed closure drew opposition from golfers, residents and elected officials. Community members also organized a petition drive and campaign to save the course.
The Shapiro administration later renewed the lease for another 10 years, allowing the George family to continue operating the course. The family has operated South Mountain Golf Course for more than 60 years.
Local golfers said the course provides an affordable public recreation option in Franklin County.
Franklin County resident Jeremy Snider said the course has been welcoming to families and young golfers. He said he regularly brings his young son to play there.
Franklin County resident Tesher Walizer said losing the course would have made golf less affordable for many people in the area.
South Mountain employee Dave Lasley said interest in the course has increased since the closure concerns became public. He said membership and play are both up since the course reopened this year.
The course will continue operating under the renewed 10-year lease.
