State Agriculture Department Issues Raw Milk Warning

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture is warning consumers to immediately discard Sunshine Dairy brand raw milk purchased between August 5 and August 15, 2025, in Berks, Lebanon, and Schuylkill counties.

Routine testing confirmed the milk was contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The product was sold in plastic gallon containers from the dairy at 9400 Old Route 22 in Bethel, Berks County, and at the following retail locations:

  • Swatty Creek Farms, 7725 Lancaster Avenue, Myerstown, Berks County
  • Shady Breeze Farm-Corn Crib, 753 PA-419, Myerstown, Lebanon County
  • The Farm Store, 113 E. Norwegian Street, Pottsville, Schuylkill County

Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, an illness with symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, nausea, and diarrhea. The illness primarily affects pregnant women, newborns, the elderly, and adults with weakened immune systems. In pregnant women, it can lead to miscarriage, premature delivery, serious infection of the newborn, or stillbirth.

No illnesses have been reported in connection with this product. Consumers who drank the milk should consult their physician if they become ill.

More information about raw milk risks is available from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Details on food safety in Pennsylvania can be found at agriculture.pa.gov.
