SU Baseball Drops Both Games of Doubleheader at Charleston
Shippensburg University‘s baseball team came up short in both games of a doubleheader at Charleston on Saturday. The Red Raiders dropped a 7-5 seven-inning game and a 3-0 nine-inning game to the Golden Eagles.
Shippensburg (5-10) and Charleston (8-4) were 3-3 through five innings of the opener before the Golden Eagles hung a four-spot in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Raiders scored twice in the top of the seventh, and got the tying run to the plate in their final at-bat but came up short.
UC starter Logan Campbell was the story of Game 2, throwing a one-hit shutout and striking out 18 hitters. Senior Zack Zoller (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) was the only Raider to reach against Campbell. He drew a walk and later singled.
In Game 1, senior Jacob Pollock (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) hit a two-run double and sophomore Lake Lloyd (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) hit a sacrifice fly in a three-run fourth inning. Junior Ben Werkheiser (Doylestown, Pa./Germantown Academy (Delaware)) hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh, putting the Raiders in late striking distance.
The three runs yielded by the Raiders in Game 2 came in the eighth inning and were unearned. Redshirt-junior Noah Inch (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) threw five innings, striking out four. Redshirt-sophomore Kiernan Higgins (Buffalo, N.Y./Bishop Timon- St. Jude (Coastal Carolina)) struck out four and allowed just two hits in three innings of relief.
Shippensburg faces Charleston at noon Sunday to conclude the weekend series.
