The No.1 Shippensburg University field hockey team took down Bloomsburg in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup at Robb Sports Complex on a sunny Saturday afternoon, 4-1.
How it happened
Shippensburg (12-1, 5-1 PSAC) got goals from freshman Agus Garibaldi (Recoleta, Argentina/Colegio San Agustin), freshman Lilly Cantabene (York, Pa./Dallastown Area), sophomore Yasmin De Meyer (Pietermaritzburg, South Africa/Epworth (Newberry)) and sophomore Emilia Conners (Havertown, Pa./Haverford). The Raiders had a 22-4 shots on goal advantage and a 16-6 penalty corner advantage.
Garibaldi scored in the opening seven minutes of the first quarter with her own rebound. However, Bloomsburg (8-7, 3-4) tied the game within five minutes of the first goal off a penalty corner deflection on the right corner. The Raiders unwilling to finish the first quarter in a tie, scored the game-winning goal off a penalty corner in the last second, on a shot from Cantabene from the top of the circle off an assist by sophomore Jocelyn Branco (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg).
In the third quarter, the Raiders continued the offensive and had six penalty corners and nine shots. The third goal came off a penalty corner, as a pass by senior Merel Hoekstra (Wassenaar, The Netherlands/Rijnlands Lyceum Wassenaar) went to De Meyer who found the bottom right of the cage.
With less than five minutes left in the game, Conners intercepted a Husky defender pass and drove all the way from the 25-yard line and hit a rocket to the bottom left of the cage to extend the lead to 4-1.
Shippensburg will head to Millersville on Wednesday for a PSAC matchup at 6 p.m.
