The Shippensburg University baseball team capped off a three-game weekend series at Charleston on Sunday with a 13-9 victory over the Golden Eagles in a nine-inning game at Segra Field at the Welch Athletic Complex.
Shippensburg (6-10) erupted for 14 hits in the win on Sunday. The Raiders also drew seven walks, tying their season high. After falling behind 2-0 after the first inning, the offense exploded for 10 runs over the next three innings.
A three-run third inning was powered by a two-run single from junior Scout Knotts (Mason Neck, Va./South County) before the Raiders scored six runs with two outs in the fourth. The highlight was a grand slam by junior Ben Werkheiser (Doylestown, Pa./Germantown Academy (Delaware)), who leads the team this season with 23 RBIs.
Charleston (8-5) crept back into the game, making it a 10-5 contest through six innings. The Raiders got two more in the seventh – one on an unearned run and another on an RBI-single by senior Zack Zoller (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) – before adding an insurance run in the eighth on an RBI-single by senior Jacob Pollock (Stafford, Va./Mountain View).
Zoller finished the day 3-for-5 with a double and a walk. Pollock was 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Knotts had a double among his two hits and is leading the team with a .400 batting average through 16 games.
Redshirt-sophomore Matt Ryan (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery (Delaware)) made his first start for the Raiders and got the win. Ryan went five innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits and struck out five. Sophomore Noah Nabholz (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville) worked two solid innings in relief, and Pollock came on to get the final three outs.
