The Shippensburg University women’s basketball team is ranked No. 3 in the first edition of the NCAA Atlantic Region rankings released Wednesday. The NCAA regional rankings are used to determine the teams that qualify for the NCAA Tournament in March.
The Raiders have not been ranked in the initial Atlantic Regional Rankings since Feb. 15, 2017, where they were ranked sixth.
Eight teams from each of the eight regions will advance to the NCAA Tournament following conference championships. The Atlantic Region is comprised of three conferences: the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), the Mountain East Conference (MEC) and the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). Each conference champion will receive an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament, regardless of its position in the rankings.
Rankings will be released every Wednesday afternoon until the announcement of the tournament field in March.
Shippensburg (21-5) is currently in a battle with West Chester, who are ranked fifth in the region, for the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Division.
SU travels to Shepherd tonight for its last road game at 5:30 p.m. The Raiders will conclude its regular season play on Saturday when they face Lock Haven at 1 p.m. on Senior Day.
