Shippensburg University‘s women’s indoor track & field team put forth a solid first day of competition Friday at the 2020 VMI Indoor Classic. The Raiders compiled eight performances that satisfied the league qualifying standard.

How it Happened

Freshman Leah Graybill (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) qualified for Saturday’s finals of the 60-meter dash, as she posted a time of 7.74 seconds in the semifinals that is .01 seconds shy of her season best and .02 seconds shy of the school record. Senior Zarria Williams (Mount Laurel, N.J./Camden Catholic (Ohio Christian)) improved her season best in the 60 to 7.95 seconds.

Senior Jordan Higgins (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) ran an indoor personal best in the 400 meters, posting a time of 1:00.14. Sophomore Carson Pennings (New Oxford, Pa./New Oxford) paced the Raiders in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.68 seconds.

For the second straight week, junior Kate Matrisciano (Whippany, N.J./Whippany Park (Sacred Heart)) had an excellent outing in the shot put – posting a top mark Friday of 44 feet, 5 ¼ inches that was good for fourth place in the competition. The put was just 1.5 inches off her indoor collegiate best achieved last week at Penn State that ranks second on the conference season leaderboard.

Freshman Sara McKean (Shinglehouse, Pa./Oswayo Valley) paced the Raiders in the triple jump with a top mark of 37 feet, 1 ¼ inches, while freshman Madison Williard (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) jumped 34 feet, 9 ½ inches. Sophomore Jenna Lytle (Altoona, Pa./Altoona Area) picked up a conference qualifier with a new indoor collegiate best of 34 feet, 7 inches.

The 4×800-meter relay quartet of sophomore Kyra Gerber (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern York), freshman Isabelle Gulgert (Herndon, Va./South Lakes), freshman Mackenzie Kurtz (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) and sophomore Sydney Morgan (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) finished sixth in 9:41.22. Gerber’s opening leg featured a posted split of 2:21.5.
