Shippensburg University sports: SU’s women swimmers sweep tri-meet

SU’s women swimmers swept a tri-meet on Friday night, defeating both Fairmont State and host Cal U. The team won three individual events and both relays in the meet.

Shippensburg University defeated Fairmont State 84-38 and Cal U. by a score of 77-47.

The Raiders won both relays and had three individual event champions on the night. Senior Madison Breiner (Glen Mills, Pa./Bayard Rustin) won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:02.06, satisfying the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying standard in the event. Sophomore Marissa Bittner (Middletown, Del./Appoquinimink) won the 200-yard backstroke in a conference cut of 2:39.60.

SU went 1-2-3 in the 200-yard breaststroke, with freshman Kristin Gebhard (Reading, Pa./Twin Valley) winning in 2:39.60. Freshman Gracie Wetzel (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) and sophomore Alyssa Tomb (Harrison City, Pa./Penn-Trafford) finished within .05 seconds of each other in second and third place.

Sophomore Michaela Hersh (Mertztown, Pa./Brandywine Heights) notched a PSAC cut in the 400-yard IM, swimming 4:53.06. Hersh was also second in the 200-yard butterfly. Freshman Lauren Croll (Honolulu, Hi./President Theodore Roosevelt) was the runner-up in the 100-yard freestyle. She swam a conference cut of 55.64 seconds. Gebhard was second in the 50-yard freestyle after swimming 26.53 seconds.

The quartet of senior Tomomi Nakano (Hershey, Pa./Hershey), Croll, Gebhard and Breiner won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:53.19. The quartet of Nakano, Croll, sophomore Sammy Taylor (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) and Breiner won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:43.52.

SU’s women swimmers are back in action Nov. 5 at Clarion.
