If you’re a business owner staring down a sizeable tax bill and also eyeing a new vehicle for your business, 2025 might be the perfect year to solve both problems with one purchase. Thanks to the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), the rules for deducting business vehicles are incredibly favorable—but only if the vehicle is purchased and placed in service by December 31, 2025.
So if your business needs wheels and you’d also appreciate some year-end tax relief, buckle up. Here’s what you need to know before you head to the dealership.
The Clock Is Ticking: What “Placed in Service” Really Means
Buying a qualifying vehicle is only half the equation. To get the deduction for 2025, you must:
1.Own the vehicle, and
2.Place it in service—meaning it must be driven for at least one business mile before midnight on December 31, 2025.
Translation: You don’t need a cross-country road trip—just take it to the bank, a job site, or grab office supplies. That one small business mile can unlock a very big deduction.
The Big Win: Heavy Vehicles (Over 6,000 lbs GVWR)
For the most generous tax deductions, look for vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of more than 6,000 pounds. Many SUVs, crossovers, pickups, and vans meet this threshold.
Why does this magic number matter? Because if the vehicle exceeds 6,000 pounds GVWR and is used for business, OBBBA allows some powerful tax benefits, including:
- 100% bonus depreciation (new or used)
- Section 179 expensing—up to $31,300 for most SUVs, and up to $2,500,000 for heavy pickups and qualifying vans
- MACRS depreciation over 5 years
- No luxury vehicle depreciation limits
This combination can allow you to write off all or nearly all of the business-use portion of the vehicle in the year you purchase it.
Heavy SUVs & Crossovers (GVWR 6,001+ lbs)
If the manufacturer classifies it as a truck and it’s over 6,000 pounds, it typically qualifies. Many popular full-size SUVs and crossovers fit the bill.
Heavy Pickups
Pickups with a bed of at least six feet get especially favorable treatment:
- They qualify for full Section 179 up to $2.5 million,
- As well as 100% bonus depreciation,
- With no luxury limits holding you back.
Short-bed trucks (under six feet) usually get treated as SUVs for deduction purposes—still good, just capped at the SUV Section 179 limit.
Cargo & Passenger Vans
Depending on design, these vans may qualify for the full Section 179 deduction and bonus depreciation, as long as the GVWR exceeds 6,000 pounds.
Cargo vans have their own IRS criteria—think no rear seats, separate driver compartment, and no oddly long nose.
Passenger vans with space for nine or more people behind the driver also get favorable treatment.
What About Regular Cars?
If the vehicle weighs 6,000 pounds or less, it falls under the IRS’s “luxury auto” rules—even if it’s not what any of us would consider luxurious.
In this category:
- Bonus depreciation is limited to $8,000, and
- Annual depreciation caps apply.
In 2025, the maximum first-year deduction for these “luxury” vehicles is $20,200. Not bad, but nowhere near the big write-offs available for heavier vehicles.
If your goal is the largest legal deduction, the IRS has—once again—made heavy vehicles the clear winner.
Electric Vehicle Credits: Gone for 2025
If you were hoping for a tax credit on an electric vehicle, OBBBA shut the door on that option.
Electric vehicle credits ended on September 30, 2025. Traditional gas or diesel vehicles are now the primary path for substantial tax deductions.
Buying vs. Leasing: Does It Matter?
This article focuses on purchases, because OBBBA’s generous expensing rules apply to ownership. Leasing has a different set of rules and typically won’t give you the huge up-front deduction that buying can. If you’re considering leasing, we can still help you compare the tax impact—but buying is where the 2025 jackpot lives.
Bottom Line
If a vehicle purchase is already on your radar—and you want to reduce your taxable income—2025 is shaping up to be a remarkable year for business vehicle deductions.
Heavy SUVs, pickups, and vans are the clear winners under OBBBA, offering:
- Massive Section 179 limits,
- 100% bonus depreciation,
- No luxury-auto caps, and
- The possibility of writing off the entire business-use portion in a single year.
Just make sure you buy it, drive it for business at least once, and get it into service before the ball drops on December 31, 2025.
