For many families, saving for a child’s future can feel overwhelming, especially when daily expenses are priority. But a new savings tool, created as part of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) aims to make long-term planning easier and more achievable. Trump Accounts are designed to help parents and guardians build meaningful financial support for their children before they reach adulthood, setting the stage for stronger opportunities at age 18 and beyond.
What Is a Trump Account?
A Trump Account is a newly established, tax-advantaged savings account for children under age 18. These accounts encourage families to save steadily over time so that when a child becomes an adult, they have financial resources to pursue higher education, start a business, buy their first car, or simply enter adulthood with less debt and a bit of a cushion.
Think of a Trump Account as a “financial launch pad”—a place to put money today that empowers tomorrow.
Who Is Eligible?
Trump Accounts are available for any U.S. child who has not yet turned age 18 in the year the account election is made and who has a valid Social Security number.
But here’s the especially exciting part: children born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028 are eligible for a one-time federal contribution of $1,000 into their account when the election is made.
That doesn’t mean only those children can have a Trump Account — all eligible children under 18 with a Social Security number can have one established. But the $1,000 government contribution applies specifically to US citizens born between 2025–2028.
Accounts may be established by a parent, guardian, or another authorized individual on behalf of the child by filing IRS Form 4547, typically with the child’s 2025 tax return or through the online portal at trumpaccounts.gov once available.
Why Trump Accounts Matter
In a time when student debt and financial stress follow many young adults into their 20s—and sometimes beyond—Trump Accounts offer something different: a head start.
Here are just a few advantages:
- Tax-advantaged contributions may reduce your current tax burden
- Investment potential allows the balance to grow over time instead of sitting idle
- Long-term focus encourages healthy financial habits for both parents and future adults
- Debt prevention — saving today may reduce the need for loans tomorrow
Every dollar contributed now is a dollar your child won’t need to borrow at age 18.
How Can Families Help the Account Grow?
Growth doesn’t have to come from big deposits although up to $5000 per year may be deposited.
Here are a few ways to build your child’s Trump Account balance:
- Set up a small automatic transfer monthly or with each paycheck
- Redirect birthday or holiday cash gifts into the account
- Ask grandparents or relatives to contribute instead of buying toys
- Add a portion of your tax refund, if finances allow
- Encourage older children to deposit part of summer job income, building lifelong savings habits
Even modest contributions can compound into meaningful support over 18 years. However, contributions to the Trump Account will not be available for deposit until after July 4, 2026.
Trump Account contributions are invested in mutual funds or exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that track the S&P 500 or similar indexes composed primarily of American companies. That means your child’s balance grows along with the performance of the U.S. stock market — historically one of the strongest long-term wealth-building engines. While market values fluctuate day-to-day, the long view offers meaningful potential for growth when contributions start early and stay invested over time.
When Does the Child Receive the Funds?
When the child turns 18, the account becomes theirs. That’s a milestone worth celebrating—not just a birthday, but a financial foundation.
The Bottom Line
Trump Accounts represent a promising new chapter in family financial planning. Rather than relying on last-minute borrowing when college bills or life expenses arrive, parents can take steps now to ensure their children step into adulthood with choices—not burdens.
If you’ve ever said, “I want my child to have more opportunities than I did,” this may be one of the simplest, most meaningful ways to make that happen.
