The thief that stole Christmas

T’was two days before Christmas and all through a house in the 200 block of West Main Street the residents were preparing for the big day and the visit from Santa. While visions of gifts and good cheer danced in their heads, a porch pirate was busily putting together a scheme to steal some of that vision.

It was 9:48 a.m. when the thief casually strolled up South Main Street, wearing a two-tone black and gray hooded jacket with neon drawstrings, blue jeans and sneakers. Carrying a white shopping bag, his eyes checked out doorsteps and porches as made his way north that morning. He was apparently on the lookout for just delivered mail-order packages.

When he spied one, he opened his shopping bag and scooped the package up, putting it in his bag in one fluid motion. He didn’t miss a step as he continued his walk north, then turned east of East Queen Street.

How do we know this?

Well, the details are all on the Chambersburg Police Department CRIMEWATCH® website. Plus, a doorbell camera caught the thief in the act on video; and the man might not have realized downtown Chambersburg has high resolution video on every street corner. Police picked up where the doorbell video left off and followed his movements until he turned onto Queen Street and got out of range of those nifty (or pesky, depending on your viewpoint) cameras.

Now he’s a wanted man. Police are still investigating and trying to get a positive identification of the porch thief before he is able to strike again. They released the above photos in hopes someone will re3cognize him.
