Thousands Without Power in Adams County Due to Substation Failure

Over 3,000 residents in Adams County are without electricity following a major power outage that began late Sunday night, June 22.

According to First Energy Corporation, the outage stems from an issue affecting Met-Ed customers in the Littlestown area near the Pennsylvania-Maryland state line. As of 1 p.m. Monday, Met-Ed reported that 3,383 residents remained without power.

Adams Electric Cooperative stated that the outage is due to a major equipment failure at a Met-Ed substation, which supplies power to one of the cooperative’s substations. While crews have been working overnight, repairs are not expected to be completed until at least mid-week.

The cooperative is urging members to reduce electricity usage during the ongoing extreme heat, warning that high energy demand could lead to extended outages. Recommendations include raising thermostat settings and delaying the use of major appliances until after 10 p.m.

Customers enrolled in the U-Shift program should expect extended control of water heaters, air conditioning, and subpanels throughout the week.

Residents are encouraged to conserve energy and monitor updates for further information on the outage and restoration efforts.
