Shippensburg University redshirt-senior linebacker Tig Spinelli was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division Defensive Athlete of the Week on Monday morning by the league office.

Spinelli was one of multiple Red Raiders up for consideration based on the performances this weekend against No. 14 West Chester. Against the Golden Rams, Spinelli finished with a career-high 13 tackles, including eight solo stops. It marked the seventh time in Spinelli’s career he finished with 10 or more tackles in a game.

Among Spinelli’s 13 tackles were two tackles-for-loss (TFLs) – one being a sack. Spinelli also blocked an extra point. It was his second blocked extra point of the season.

The SU defense forced just one turnover through the first four games before coming away with five on Saturday – the most turnovers forced by the Red Raiders in a game since Week 2 of last season against Slippery Rock.

Shippensburg plays Shepherd at noon Saturday from Ram Stadium.
