Totem Pole Playhouse Welcomes New Producing Artistic Director

Ryan B. Gibbs has assumed the role of producing artistic director at Totem Pole Playhouse, starting immediately for the theater’s 74th season in Franklin County. With over a decade of involvement in various capacities at Totem Pole, Gibbs takes over from David Hemsley Caldwell, who served in the position since late 2020. The selection of Gibbs was made in collaboration with Totem Pole’s board of directors, with Caldwell assisting in the transition this spring. While Caldwell steps down due to health concerns, he will remain connected to Totem Pole as a consultant and guest artist.

Gibbs brings 25 years of experience in the theater industry, with credits spanning directing, producing, designing, and stage management. His extensive resume includes work on Broadway and National Tours, contributing to productions such as “Rent,” “Wicked,” “Avenue Q,” and “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” among others. Previously, Gibbs served as the artistic director at Allenberry Playhouse and played a key role in establishing the Lancaster-based theater company, The Reverie Acting Company. Additionally, he spent four years as a producer for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Gibbs resides in Lancaster with his wife and two sons.

Totem Pole Playhouse holds historical significance in Franklin County, closely associated with William H. Putch, who led productions from 1954 until his passing in 1983, often collaborating with his wife, actress Jean Stapleton. The theater has been instrumental in promoting the cultural landscape of the region, with several actors launching successful careers after gracing its stage.

Gibbs takes the reins from Caldwell, who succeeded Rowan Joseph in late 2020. Joseph, credited with rescuing Totem Pole from financial difficulties, departed under strained circumstances. His tenure followed that of Ray Ficca (2008-2013), Carl Schurr (1984-2008), and Putch.
