Tractor Trailer Crash Closes I-81 South in Franklin County

Photos and information obtained from Franklin Fire Company

A crash involving two tractor trailers shut down a section of Interstate 81 southbound early Tuesday morning near Wayne Avenue.

The incident occurred at mile marker 14, where a tractor trailer caught fire. Initial reports suggested a rollover, but officials confirmed that was not the case. A large rock debris field and a diesel fuel fire were reported at the scene.

All occupants were able to get out of the vehicles, though one person required a medical helicopter for injuries. Crews contained the fire, which was declared out by 6:30 a.m., but continued to monitor the area.

I-81 southbound was shut down at Exit 16 (Lincoln Way). As of 8:15 a.m., the southbound fast lane and shoulder had reopened, though the closure remained in place for other lanes for the foreseeable future.
