UPMC Central Pa. Introduces New Spine Care Initiative

UPMC in Central Pa. has initiated a spine care program designed to enhance the patient experience through a collaborative approach involving a multi-disciplinary team of experts. This program focuses on evaluating and treating various spine conditions, including spine tumors, scoliosis, back pain, and symptoms like weakness or numbness in arms and legs. Bryan Bolinger, D.O., a neurosurgeon at UPMC Spine Care, emphasizes the program’s goal to create personalized care plans to improve patients’ quality of life significantly.

The spine care team comprises eight physicians and six advanced practice providers, integrating specialists from neurosurgery, orthopaedics, rehabilitation medicine, and pain management. The treatment plans offered are tailored to individual patient needs and may encompass a range of therapies including exercise, pain management, physical therapy, and surgical interventions, which may involve robotic techniques.

Highlighting the spine’s critical role in daily functions such as sitting and standing, Jerry Robinson, M.D., an orthopaedic surgeon at UPMC Spine Care, notes the widespread need for spine-related medical attention. David Gibbons, senior vice president, Health Services Division, and regional president, UPMC in Central Pa., acknowledges the high demand for spine-related care in the region. He states that the program’s innovative, team-driven approach is set to meet this need, aiming to significantly enhance the quality of life for residents of Central Pa. suffering from spine conditions.
