Waynesboro Hospital is one of the nation’s top teaching hospitals, according to The Leapfrog Group.

This marks the second year in a row that the national watchdog organization has given WellSpan Waynesboro Hospital that honor. The Leapfrog Group is a standard-setter for health care safety and quality, according to a WellSpan news release.

“To be named a Top Hospital by Leapfrog two years in a row shows just how dedicated this team is to keeping our patients safe,” said Waynesboro Hospital President Melissa Dubrow. “The COVID-19 pandemic has really added another layer to the importance of safety in our hospital.”

She calls the recognition “well deserved.” Each WellSpan team member dedicates themselves to providing the safest and best care for patients, she said.

The Leapfrog Top Hospital award is one of the most competitive awards American hospitals can receive. Of 2,200 hospitals considered for the award, 149 received Leapfrog Top Hospital status.

Leapfrog considers hospitals with systems in place to prevent medication errors and lower infection rates for its Top Hospital designation. They must also have an A in the most recent Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades to be eligible for the Top Hospital designation.

Leapfrog President/CEO Leah Binder recognized WellSpan Waynesboro Hospital as a Top Hospital this year.

“Even with the continued strain of the COVID-19 pandemic, WellSpan Waynesboro Hospital has demonstrated an extraordinary dedication to excellent health care in the central Pennsylvania community,” she said. “We congratulate the board, leadership, staff and clinicians who put their patients first.”

Hospitals ranking top among peers on the Leapfrog Hospital Survey qualify for the Top Hospitals distinction. The survey assesses hospital performance on the highest standards for quality and patient safety.

Physicians and providers at WellSpan Waynesboro hospital help educate residents, medical students, nurse practitioner students and physician assistant students. Their clinical affiliations include Penn State College of Medicine, Drexel University College of Medicine, West Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine and several other colleges.

WellSpan Waynesboro Hospital was named a Top Teaching hospital in 2020 as well. In November, WellSpan Waynesboro Hospital, along with four other WellSpan hospitals, received A safety grades by The Leapfrog Group.
