WellSpan Outlines Care Options for In-Person, Virtual, Urgent, and Emergency Needs

WellSpan Health offers multiple care options to help patients receive appropriate medical treatment based on the urgency of their condition.

For life-threatening emergencies, patients are advised to call 9-1-1 or go directly to the nearest emergency department. Emergency care is intended for severe or critical conditions, with patients seen based on severity. Insurance is not required, and costs vary.

For non-emergency situations, WellSpan provides several alternatives:

Primary Care
Primary care is recommended for minor illnesses or injuries, wellness visits, and chronic condition management. Patients can schedule in-person visits, video visits, or e-visits through a MyWellSpan account. WellSpan also offers a free nurse navigation service to help patients find a primary care provider. Insurance is not required, and costs vary.

Walk-In Urgent Care
Urgent care locations are available for minor illnesses, injuries, and certain preventive services. No appointment is required, and some locations allow patients to reserve a spot online. Typical wait times range from 20 to 60 minutes. Insurance is not required, and costs vary.

Virtual On-Demand Care
Virtual on-demand care provides 24/7 access to a doctor through MyWellSpan using a phone, computer, or tablet. This option is intended for minor illnesses and injuries, with wait times as short as 10 minutes. Insurance is not required, and costs vary.

WellSpan also offers an online tool to help patients determine the appropriate level of care based on their symptoms.

According to WellSpan, virtual on-demand care and urgent care are appropriate for conditions such as allergies, cold and flu symptoms, cough, fever, headaches, rashes, pink eye, sinus infections, urinary tract infections, joint pain, muscle strains, insect bites, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, and similar minor conditions.

Urgent care is also recommended for services including flu, Tdap, and rabies immunizations; ear pain; minor burns, cuts, and scrapes; sore throat; sunburn; gout; pneumonia; arthritis; sports-related head injuries; sprains and strains; tendonitis; stitches; physicals requiring immunization records; and tuberculosis tests.

Emergency care is recommended for serious and life-threatening conditions, including chest pain, difficulty breathing, heart attack or stroke symptoms, severe burns, major trauma, compound fractures, seizures, uncontrolled bleeding, ingestion of poison, snake bites, shock, severe abdominal pain, and major head injuries.

Additional information and access to care services are available through the MyWellSpan platform.

Who We Are

The Franklin County Free Press, established by Vicky Taylor in 2019, emerged as a beacon of local journalism for the residents of Franklin County. Under Vicky's leadership, it quickly became an essential source of news, particularly at a time when major newspaper publications were increasingly overlooking local coverage.

On January 1, 2022, the torch was passed to Nathan Neil and his firm, Neil Publishing, LLC. Neil, a local entrepreneur with multiple thriving businesses in Chambersburg, shares Vicky's fervent commitment to both the community and the world of local journalism.

Rooted in the heart of Franklin County and powered by its residents, the Franklin County Free Press continues to bridge the gap, ensuring that the local stories, events, and issues that matter most to the community remain in the spotlight.
