WellSpan York Hospital’s extracorporeal membrane oxygenation program treated 110 patients in a single year, setting a program record, according to WellSpan Health.
Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, or ECMO, temporarily takes over the work of the heart, lungs or both. It provides life support while patients recover when traditional treatments are no longer enough.
Dr. Cristian Dumitrescu performed the program’s 100th procedure. He trained at WellSpan York Hospital and later returned to join the team providing the specialized care.
