Shelby Harmon, a Wilson College student majoring in animal studies with minors in biology and psychology, traveled to Antarctica in January 2025 to fulfill a childhood dream.
Prior to the trip, Harmon was diagnosed with Myotonic Dystrophy Type 1, a severe form of Muscular Dystrophy. Despite the diagnosis, she continued with her plans and completed what she described as the hardest hike of her life, reaching the summit in pain but determined.
During the expedition, Harmon met ornithologist Ken Wright, who became a mentor and influenced her academic research. Their conversations contributed to the development of her senior thesis titled “The Disappearing Foundation: How Krill Decline Threatens Antarctica and the Planet.”
More details about her journey and research are available in the latest edition of Wilson Magazine: mag.wilson.edu/navigating-the-frozen-frontier.
