SU’s Women swimmers started its weekend at Ithaca’s Bomber Invitational, with Layren Croll and Madison Breiner among standout athletes on meet’s first day.
Shippensburg University’s women swimmers got their weekend started Friday with several solid performances at the 10th Annual Bomber Invitational hosted by Ithaca College.
Unlike the F&M meet held before Thanksgiving that featured morning prelims and evening finals, Ithaca’s meet is set up with four timed finals sessions. Friday night’s session included the 500-yard freestyle, the 200-yard IM, the 50-yard freestyle and the 200-yard medley relay.
Senior Madison Breiner (Glen Mills, Pa./Bayard Rustin) debuted in the 200-yard individual medley and paced the Raiders with a time of 2:16.26 – good enough for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying time despite not having swam the event before at a meet. Sophomore Rachel Johnston (Lexington Park, Md./Leonardtown) also notched a conference cut in the event and came within a few tenths of a second of her lifetime PR in the event with a time of 2:16.41.
Freshman Lauren Croll (Honolulu, Hi./President Theodore Roosevelt) posted another solid time in the 50-yard freestyle, placing fourth in 24.48 seconds. Croll and sophomore Sammy Taylor (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) earned PSAC cuts, as Taylor swam 25.36 seconds.
Senior Tomomi Nakano (Hershey, Pa./Hershey), Croll, freshman Kristin Gebhard (Reading, Pa./Twin Valley) and Breiner teamed up for a second-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay of 1:48.95.
Sophomore Alyssa Tomb (Harrison City, Pa./Penn-Trafford) paced the Raiders in the 500-yard freestyle with a PSAC cut of 5:27.99.
