Wilson College Phoenix: Women’s hoops fall to CSU

Wilson’s women’s hoops team was on the road Wednesday, taking on Clark’s Summit University’s Defenders in their first match of the New Year. The women’s basketball team hoped to continue their undefeated run in the Colonel States Athletic Conference (CSAC) showdown. Instead, the Phoenix (5-5, 4-1 CSAC) fell to the Defenders (10-1, 6-0 CSAC) by a final score of 97-54.

How It Happened

Clarks Summit got the game started on a 13-2 run. Later on, Wilson started to gain some momentum, but the Defenders closed out the quarter leading, 21-8. In the second quarter, the Phoenix jumped on a 5-2 run, eventually cutting the deficit to 12 points with just under two and a half minutes left in the half. Clarks Summit entered halftime leading by a score of 42-26. 

In the second half, junior Naomi Hanton (Bristow, Va., Keystone College) came out with two quick jumpers to get things going early. Later in the third quarter, sophomore Krystal Kienast (Purcellville, VA, Loudon Valley HS) knocked down a layup with three seconds left, as the Phoenix went into the final quarter trailing, 65-39. Wilson worked hard but went on to drop this one by a final score of 97-54.

Hanton and junior Yaya Cannon (Lancaster, Pa., Elizabethtown College) both dropped 14 points while adding five and eight rebounds, respectively. Cannon also went on to add a season-high seven assists. Junior Madison Ross (New Oxford, PA., New Oxford) added 11 points while junior Amanda Smida (Landenberg, Pa., Penn State Harrisburg) chipped in nine.
