Shippensburg University sports: Women’s Track & Field championships

The Shippensburg University women’s outdoor track & field team began the 2021 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday with competition in the heptathlon and the hammer throw.

Kayla Brooks (Hanover, Pa./South Western) and Carson Pennings (New Oxford, Pa./New Oxford) got off to strong starts in the heptathlon and sit in seventh and eighth place respectively through four events.

Brooks began by narrowly missing her PR in the 100-meter hurdles by running 16.59 seconds and then cleared the high jump bar at 4 feet, 10 ½ inches. She finished her day with a new PR in the 200 meters, running 28.17 seconds.

Pennings, fresh off a PR in the 100-meter hurdles last week at West Chester, improved once again with a new best of 15.49 seconds. She also broke the 28-second mark in the 200 meters for the first time, posting a time of 27.41 seconds.

In the hammer throw, Madisen Kling (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) was the lone Raider competitor; she placed 12th on a top mark of 136 feet, 7 inches.
