The Capital Wing of the CAF, Commemorative Air Force, will bring its WWII TBM Avenger torpedo bomber and Boeing PT-17 Stearman bi-plane to the Lancaster Rotary Club “Wings and Wheels” event at the Lancaster (PA) Airport on Saturday May 17. The event is open to the public from 9am to 2pm with free admission. Onsite parking is $5 per car with proceeds to benefit the Summer Youth Experience in Lancaster. The airport is located at 500 Airport Rd, Lititz, PA 17543.
Warbird rides will be available in the TBM Avenger, the largest single-engine bomber of WWII, and the Stearman open cockpit bi-plane. Flights may be purchased in advance at the Capital Wing website https://www.
“For most people, a warbird ride is a bucket list item, a once in a lifetime opportunity. For those in the Lancaster area, this event is the opportunity to fly in a WWII warbird,” said Pete Ballard, event organizer for the Capital Wing. “The public can purchase rides in either the TBM Avenger named Doris Mae, or in the Boeing Stearman bi-plane, the primary trainer used in WWII. Either warbird ride is an exciting experience, never to be forgotten.”
The public can get up close to a number of static aircraft on display including a rare Japanese Fuji LM-1, one of only three still flying in the world, a classic Beechcraft “V-tail” Bonanza, and a Vietnam-era Bell UH-1H “Huey” helicopter from Liberty Warbirds. Abella Aviation will offer helicopter rides. Other attractions on the ramp will be the Capital Wing PX selling military/aviation themed hats, tees, models and authentic WWII dog tags, plus an ultra-rare B-26 bomber 50-caliber machine gun turret. Foods trucks will be at the airport so no one goes hungry during lunch.
